Does your footwear become tight ...at times?

Does your footwear become tight ...at times?

The Impact of swollen legs & ankles on wellbeing [1,2,3,4.5]

Swollen ankles and feet can occur after prolonged periods of standing or sitting, leading to tightening of footwear. This may be due to fluid retention, known as oedema. In addition to prolonged sitting or standing, certain medications, high salt intake, various medical conditions, and even pregnancy can contribute to this condition.

Are there any significant underlying issues?

There are several possible causes for an oedema diagnosis, including gravity, weakened valves of your veins (venous insufficiency), underlying medical conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and kidney diseases, side effects from medication, poor nutrition, pregnancy, and a compromised immune system.

Should I be concerned about a swollen leg?

Get medical help right away if your legs swell for no reason. It is particularly important if you have any other warning signs, such as breathing difficulties, chest pain, or leg pain.

What tips can be followed to prevent leg and ankle swelling?

  • Remember to exercise regularly to improve blood circulation.
  • If you have a desk job, try to change positions every couple of hours to avoid prolonged standing or sitting, which can damage your circulation.
  • Be mindful of your salt intake, as excessive salt can lead to leg swelling.
  • Elevate your legs while sitting or sleeping.
  • Remember to wash, dry, and moisturize your feet regularly to avoid infections.
  • Wear wide and comfortable shoes, & consider using compression socks for extra comfort.
  • Try contrast bath therapy to prevent the swelling.

Swelling in the foot, ankle, or leg can result from various reasons, such as fluid buildup, injury, or infection. However, it can also indicate a severe condition that needs medical attention.
