Rain, Rain … go away!

Facts (1)

1. Malaria is a serious disease that is PREVENTABLE & TREATABLE.

2. India accounts for approx. 83% of malaria cases and deaths in S.E. Asia (5)

3. Pregnant women are at high risk of dying from complications of severe Malaria.

Are all the Malaria the same?(3)

Plasmodium parasites cause Malaria. Humans get infected via mosquitos containing them. These are primarily of 4 types: Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae. Out of these, P. falciparum frequently results in severe infections and needs prompt treatment.

What are the Symptoms(2)

Typically, patients get fever and flu-like illnesses, including shaking, chills, headaches, muscle aches, and tiredness. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea may also occur. Malaria may cause anaemia and jaundice because of the loss of red blood cells. Blood investigations confirm the diagnosis.(6)

Is there any Vaccine? (4)

World Health Organisation (WHO) gave its NOD to the world's first vaccine against Malaria. Which significantly reduces the risk of severe disease in malaria-infected children. However, it will take some time to be available in the market.

The 'ABCD' of Malaria Prevention(7)

• Awareness: Be Aware of the risk & the symptoms

• Bite Prevention: Avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, especially between dusk & dawn.

• Chemoprophylaxis: If prescribed for you, use anti-malarial medications to prevent infection.

• Diagnosis: Immediately seek treatment if a fever develops one week or more after being in a malarial area.
