HMPV: What you need to know

HMPV: What you need to know (1,2,3,4)

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that produces symptoms similar to the common cold. First identified in children in 2001, HMPV typically affects individuals by the age of five. Reinfections are common throughout life, as the immunity gained from an initial infection tends to be insufficient for long-term protection.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) (1)has indicated that while HMPV resembles other respiratory illnesses, particularly in winter, it is generally less severe than COVID-19. The Union Health Ministry assures that, despite the virus circulating in India, there is no cause for alarm.

Symptoms to Watch For:Cough, Rash, Fever, Nasal congestion or runny nose & Shortness of breath or wheezing.

How It Spreads? Through respiratory droplets from cough & sneezes, close contact & contaminated surfaces.

Who’s at Risk? Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

How can you diagnose HMPV?

Diagnosis often relies on the presentation of symptoms and medical history, with doctors potentially using a nasal or throat swab for laboratory testing, though testing for HMPV is generally reserved for cases with significant symptoms.

How do you take care of yourself when you have the virus?

To address mild symptoms at home, it is advised to maintain proper hydration and seek guidance from your family doctor for additional medications.

To curb infection risks, the Health Department recommends the following precautions:

  1. Wash your hands frequently with soap or use hand sanitizer.
  2. Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
  3. Avoid crowded places, especially if you're feeling unwell.
  4. Wear a mask if you’re sick.
  5. Keep your hands away from your face.
  6. Don’t share food or utensils.
