If you're a runner, a dancer, or a weekend warrior, you may be familiar with the pain & swelling of Achilles tendinitis. But what is this condition & how common is it?

What is Achilles Tendinitis?

It's a condition when the Achilles tendon, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone, becomes inflamed. This tendon is crucial for activities such as running, jumping, & walking.

The Achilles tendon is one of the most frequently injured tendons in the body. It has a lifetime injury incidence of up to 24% in athletes, particularly in runners. Some of the risk factors include increasing the intensity or duration of runs, changing running surface or footwear, having tight calf muscles, or a history of lower limb injury.

Let's look at the symptoms

It is primarily characterized by discomfort at the rear of the ankle, particularly when commencing or ceasing physical activity. Swelling, rigidity, and limited mobility in the ankle may also be present.

What measures can be taken to avoid it?

It can often be treated at home with rest, ice, compression, elevation, & anti-inflammatory medication. Few of the prevention strategies include:

  • Stretching before exercising is essential to avoid tendon pain and injury. Begin with stretches focused on the Achilles tendon, calf muscles, & plantar fascia.
  • Strengthening: Eccentric training may help strengthen the Achilles tendon, as well as connecting muscles (Gastrocnemius & soleus muscles).
  • Cooling down after exercise & wearing supportive footwear with good cushioning and arch support are also important.

By putting in place successful prevention strategies, you can experience positive changes and make lifestyle choices that enhance your overall health, ultimately aiding in reaching your long-term running goals.
