Seizure Smart

Seizure Smart:

"First aid starts with using your Brain!" (1,2,3,4)

  • A seizure is a sudden and uncontrolled burst of electrical activity between brain cells in some localized or overall parts of the brain.
  • It can lead to loss of consciousness, uncontrolled movements, muscle stiffness, or loss of control, and can cause temporary abnormalities in muscle tone, behaviors, sensations, or states of awareness.

First aid for Generalized tonic-clonic (Grand mal) Seizure:

Generalized seizures can be dangerous as the person may be unaware of their surroundings and unable to protect themselves. The uncontrolled movements increase the risk of injury.

Things to keep in mind:
  1. ABCs: Assess, Protect, Comfort: Access the situation, protect the person from harm, and provide comfort during and after the seizure.
  2. Creating a safe zone:  Loosen any tight clothing or necktie that makes breathing difficult and remove nearby objects that could harm the person.
  3. Cushioning the Fall:  It will make a tangible difference in reducing the impact of seizures by gently guiding them to their feet, putting them on their side for breathing support and decreasing the risk of choking.
  4. Post Seizure Care: Talk to the person to ensure they have regained consciousness. Stay with and reassure the person until they have recovered.

When to call for medical assistance:

  1. The seizure continues for more than 5 minutes.
  2. The person goes into another seizure attack without regaining consciousness.
  3. The person has trouble breathing after the seizure.
  4. The person has never had a seizure before.
  5. The person is injured, Pregnant or Sick.

Stop! Do NOT

  1. Do not restrain or hold down the person during the seizure.
  2. Do not move the person unless necessary.
  3. Do not offer the person any food or water.
  4. Please do not put anything into their mouth.
  5. Do not give CPR or any mouth-to-mouth first aid.
