Debunking Plantar Fasciitis Myths: Facts You Need to Know for Foot Health(1,2,3)

Plantar fasciitis (PLAN-tur fas-e-I-tis) is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of each foot & connects the heel bone to the toes, known as the plantar fascia.

  • Plantar Fasciitis represents a torn ‘foot muscle’: It runs along the surface of the small muscles on the bottom of the foot. Continual stretching or straining of the plantar fascia may lead to irritation & pain in the heel area.

  • Plantar Fasciitis is caused by heel spurs: A heel spur is a rare occurrence that involves a bony growth on the underside of the heel bone, often not associated with plantar fasciitis.

  • It only occurs in those with ‘flat feet’: Plantar fasciitis is frequently linked with heel spurs, although the two conditions are not directly related. While heel spurs can be found in about 10% of people, they are not the primary cause of plantar fasciitis.

  • It is hereditary: There is no genetic predisposition known to be linked to plantar fasciitis.

  • There is no 'cure': Each patient presents with a distinct set of symptoms & varying levels of severity for their condition, which is treatable.

  • Plantar fasciitis Surgery is a ‘big’ operation: Previously, traditional surgery for plantar fasciitis required a lengthy incision to release the plantar fascia and eliminate any bone spur. Thankfully, this is no longer required.

By dispelling misconceptions and learning the truth about plantar fasciitis, you can proactively address your symptoms and enhance the health of your feet.
