Sugar vs Jaggery

Jaggery vs. Sugar -The Sweet Debate

On the one hand, there is jaggery, the traditional unrefined sweet delight, and on the other hand, there is sugar, the refined sweet crystals. But is jaggery a healthier alternative to sugar?[1,2,3,4]

The Golden Elixir of Sweetness: Jaggery

Jaggery is made using traditional pressing and distilling palm or cane juice packed with a unique flavour - nature's sweetener, an unrefined gem.

Not-So-Innocent Sweet Culprit: Sugar
Our favourite sweetener, sugar, is delicious but stripped of essential nutrients through refined processing.

Sweet blues on our body:

Sweeteners have varied body effects depending on the types- few are good, and few are harmful.

A few of them are:

  • Temporary spike in blood glucose concentration
  • Insulin release in the body
  • Energy production
  • A momentary satisfaction
  • Craving for more
  • Risk of obesity, heart disease, & T-2 diabetes.

Is Jaggery Better Than Sugar?
Jaggery is more nutritious than refined sugar due to its molasses content -which adds micronutrients to the final product. Nutrition profile may vary based on the plant used (cane or palm).

  • Mineral & Vitamin Rich: Jaggery contains essential minerals like Iron, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, and Potassium.
  • Lower glycemic index: Reasonable at blood sugar level to remain controlled.
  • Digestive aid: Acts as a mild laxative.
  • Rich in antioxidants: Helps to fight off free radicals.
  • Iron booster: Beneficial for those with iron deficiency anemia
  • Detoxifying liver: Flush away toxins
  • Healthier skin: By cleansing blood
  • Others: Alleviate menstrual pain and cramps

Still, it's mostly sugar...

Jaggery may contain more nutrients than refined sugar but is still high in calories. While it can be an excellent alternative to replace white sugar, it is essential to consume it in moderation to enjoy its sweetness without compromising your health. Moderation is the key to savouring jaggery without compromising one's well-being.
