What Is Thyroid?

The thyroid is an organ that secretes hormones. Any health problem that occurs due to hormonal imbalance in the body leads to many disorders and it needs proper and immediate attention. The thyroid plays an important role in day to day metabolic activities of the human body. Thyroid gland mainly secretes three hormones:

  • Tetraiodothyronine which is also known as T4
  • Triiodothyronine which is commonly known as T3
  • Calcitonin

  • Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of Thyroid are mentioned below:

  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Thinning hair
  • Inflammation of the thyroid gland
  • Depression accompanied by anxiety
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Weight gain
  • Dry skin
  • Muscle weakness and aches in muscles

  • You should consult your doctor immediately if you are facing any of the symptoms that are mentioned above

    Diagnosis

Doctors can diagnose disorders related to thyroid at an early stage. Your doctor will ask you about the symptoms and will ask about your medical history. Your doctor will ask you to go through the blood test as it will hem them diagnose the health conditions.

    Blood tests

Blood tests can measure the level of the thyroid hormone thyroxine and the level of TSH. If the TSH level in the blood is high or thyroxine level in the blood is low, this indicates an underactive thyroid. This is because the pituitary gland of humans produces more Thyroid Stimulating Hormone to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone.

TSH test is the best screening test, this is the reason why doctors will ask you to check TSH level first and then if needed thyroxine level.

This test of TSH level in the blood helps doctors in determining the kind of dosage of medicine that a patient needs. This test also diagnoses a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism, which usually doesn't show any signs or symptoms.

You should also make your doctor aware of the certain medications that you were taking before the blood test, as it might hinder the final report.

    Treatment

If a person is suffering from hypothyroidism, they have to replace the thyroid hormone with medications for the rest of his/her life. If your thyroid slows down, no drugs, surgery, or complementary medicine can boost it. Your doctor may prescribe you a thyroid hormone made by humans. Drugs like levothyroxine are generally prescribed but it comes with rare side effects such as chest pain or nervousness while taking these drugs. Few changes in the dosage of medication can reduce this side effect.
