What Is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis is a medical condition in which the appendix is inflamed. It is a 3 and a half-inch-long tissue that extends from the large intestine. Some studies have shown that the appendix plays some role in the immunity of the gut, however, nothing is certain. One thing is certain that human beings can survive without an appendix.

If a person is suffering from appendicitis, they need a quick surgery that will cut and remove the appendix. If appendicitis is left untreated, the swollen appendix will burst and spill the infection into the abdominal cavity. This can lead to peritonitis, which is a life-threatening disease.

Symptoms

Appendicitis is common between the ages group of ten and thirty. One of the most common symptoms of appendicitis is severe pain in the abdomen. Other symptoms of appendicitis are mentioned below:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Appetite loss
  • Vomiting
  • Swelling in your abdomen
  • A low-grade fever

  • If you are facing any of the above-mentioned symptoms, then you should consult y0ur doctor immediately.

    Diagnosis

Your doctor will primarily speculate on the analysis of appendicitis based on your medical history, symptoms, and physical examination. A doctor can further ask you to go through ultrasound, x-ray, or at times with the MRI test, to be fully sure.

A doctor can also apply some tension and pressure on a particular area of the belly. Some symptoms of appendicitis are common with other illnesses, such as gallbladder obstacles, UTI (urinary tract infection), and much more.

Tests that are used to diagnose appendicitis are:

  • A Blood tests
  • CT scans and ultrasound
  • Abdominal exam that detects swelling, soreness, and infection

  • Treatment

The treatment of appendicitis generally requires an operation that extracts the infected appendix, which is known as Appendectomy. Your doctor will give your antibiotics before the procedure.

An open appendectomy surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon that will make one incision on the lower right side of your abdomen. Then your appendix will be removed, and the wound will be closed with stitches. In case your appendix has burst, this procedure will clean your abdominal cavity.

Generally, you will recuperate quicker and heal with a smaller amount of scarring and pain. This type of surgery is highly beneficial for aged adults and patients who are obese. A patient that has to go through an appendectomy will have to spend over two days in the hospital. This can cost them approximately Rs 40,000/-.
