What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which a person’s brain works abnormally. This includes seizures, sensations, unusual behavior, and loss of awareness. These seizures may be hereditary or related to a brain injury, but in most cases cause is unknown. This disease affects people of all genders, ethnic backgrounds, races, and ages.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of Epilepsy are mentioned below:

  • High fever
  • Temporary confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Unaware of the surrounding
  • Anxiety, fear, déjà vu
  • Longer seizures (more than 5 minutes)
  • Unconscious after seizure stops
  • Get back to back seizures
  • Uncontainable jerking movements of the legs and arms

If a person is suffering from epilepsy then he/ she will experience the same seizure again and again, so symptoms will be alike. If you are facing any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should book an appointment immediately with your neurologist.

  • Diagnosis

It is hard to diagnose epilepsy as health conditions like migraine, fainting, and panic attacks have the same symptoms. Your doctor will ask you some questions regarding the seizure. So, you should tell everything that you remember. Your doctor may ask you to go through the following tests:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG): This test will help your doctor to see whether there is any unusual electrical activity in your brain or not as it is common in the person suffering from epilepsy. A sensor will be attached to your scalp that will catch electrical signals.
  • Brain Scan: This scan will help your doctor to see whether there is any tumor growing in your brain or not. This scan also finds if your brain has been scarred or there is some internal damage. All these things can cause epilepsy. With the help of radio waves and magnetic fields, your doctor can see a clear image of your brain.

  • Treatment

Proper treatment can help the person suffering from epilepsy as it will lessen the seizures or will completely stop seizures. Treatments include:

  • Anti-Epileptic Drugs
  • Surgery that can remove the part of the brain that is causing seizure.
  • A small electrical device that can control the seizures
  • The ketogenic diet as it helps in controlling seizures

  • In some cases, a person suffering from epilepsy needs treatment for life. However, once seizures stop, you can stop the treatment procedure. Your doctor knows better, he/ she will prescribe you the best treatment on the basis of the severity of your disease.

    Health Insurance

The healthcare sector has modernized over the last few decades. This has led to many advancements in the medical world, but it has also skyrocketed the healthcare cost. Treatment for epilepsy can put a major strain on your bank balance. Therefore, it is advised to buy health insurance policy which will provide financial coverage that can take care of medical expenses and hospitalization bills. It takes care of pre and post hospitalization bills. If you buy health insurance, you will not only get the cashless treatment from a network hospital where the bill is directly settled by your insurance provider with the hospital but will also enjoy tax benefits under section 80D of Income Tax Act, 1961. Make sure to know your policy details and covers before purchasing a health insurance policy.
