If the patient is suffering from a health condition, the doctor will ignore these behaviors as it may be the side effect of the treatment. If not, then the doctor will recommend the patient to a specialist such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or psychotherapist.

    Treatment

There is no cure, but doctors generally use two ways to treat this disease. One is medicinal and the other is therapeutic.

Medication: There are several medications that help in improving and controlling hyperactive and impulsive behavior. These are:

  • Amphetamine (Adzenys XR ODT, Dyanavel)
  • Dexmethylphenidate (Focalin)
  • Dextroamphetamine (Adderall, Dexedrine)
  • Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse)

  • Patients that are older than 6 years may take non-stimulant medications like:

  • Atomoxetine (Strattera)
  • Clonidine (Kapvay)
  • Guanfacine (Intuniv)

  • Therapy: The main aim of therapy is to change the behavior of the patient. Training in social skills like sharing, taking turns, waiting, etc can bring changes in behaviors. Support groups are also helpful for adults who are suffering from ADHD.
