Multi-country Monkeypox Outbreak…Should we be worried?

​This viral disease was initially found in monkeys & was first seen in humans in 1970 in the Republic of the Congo. It is now endemic in Central & West Africa. However, recent cases have been reported from the U.K, U.S.A, Europe, Australia and Canada, where these cases were never found. However, past data from Africa also suggests that smallpox vaccine is at least 85% effective in preventing monkeypox.

What Is Monkeypox?^^

1. It is a viral disease similar, but less severe, to smallpox, which got transmitted from animals to humans.

2. It can be transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, skin lesions, internal mucosal surfaces, such as in the mouth, throat, rectum, respiratory droplets while coughing or sneezing and contaminated objects.

What are the Symptoms?#

1. Acute fever, an extensive characteristic rash all over the body lasting from 2 to 4 weeks, is the primary symptom.

2. Patients may also experience:

a) Headache

b) Lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes)

c) Myalgia (muscle and body aches)

d) Back pain

e) Asthenia (profound weakness) 

What are the recommended measures?**

1. Resume usage of proper mask and hygiene.

2. Foods containing animal meat need to be properly cooked before eating.

3. Avoid close contact with infected people or contaminated materials.

4. A temperature scan & Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test in suspected travellers of the last 21 days from countries that have reported cases is recommended.

5. Suspected people must be isolated & reported to the appropriate authorities.

6. Isolation and awareness in communities to prevent infection and stop transmission and thereby breaking the chain is the key!
