What does my policy not cover?


​The best way to understand your medical insurance cover is to know the exclusions of your health policy equally well. Things not covered under Reliance HealthWise Insurance are:

  • Any pre–existing illness for the first two years/ four years of the policy as per the plan selected

​What is the need for Health Insurance?

Health Insurance Policy safeguards the health from the impact of illness thereby offering financial security to the Individual / Family. A health insurance policy ensures cover for your Individual / Family against the risk of incurring medical expenses.

With the rising incidence of diseases and cost of treatment, any illness can mean substantial financial outgo for Individual / Family. Health insurance allows to plan for such events without feeling the financial burden of treatment. It also offers tax exemption on the premium paid to the Proposer under Section 80 D of the Income Tax Act. (Up to Rs.15000 for an individual or Rs.20000 for senior citizen of over 65 years of age)

Why do I need a health insurance policy when I’m covered under my employer's group policy?

Your employers will cover your medical expenses only till you are employed with them. If you switch jobs or retire or start something on your own, you will not be covered under any policy, so it’s always good to have your own health insurance – for yourself and your family.

Apart from this, a health insurance policy can also act as a supplement to your existing medical cover in case the cost of a particular medical treatment is higher than your existing cover level.

What do you mean by Pre-Existing Disease?

​A pre-existing disease is any condition, ailment or injury or related condition(s), for which the insured person had signs or symptoms, and /or were diagnosed, and / or received medical advice / treatment within 36 months prior to 1st health insurance policy issued by Us under which the insured person was covered.

What do you understand by Sum Insured?

​Sum Insured is the maximum amount of money the Insurance Company will pay to the insured in the event of claim under His / Her health insurance policy. This amount is opted by the insured at the time of buying the policy.

​What do you understand by Floater Option?

Floater policy is a cover where all the family members are covered for the same Sum Insured under single health insurance plan with the payment of single premium.

The Sum Insured amount can be used by any member of the family upto the maximum limit of Sum Insured, irrespective of the number of claims. For instance, if you take a floater policy of Rs. 5 Lakh for your family, any insured / insureds under the policy can utilize the Sum Insured upto Rs.5 Lakh which is independent on the no. of claims. However, if you take a Individual health insurance policy instead of a floater, you have to define fixed amounts towards each family member and any unused Sum Insured from one family member cannot be transferred to another member, in the event of claim where the claim amount exceeds the limit of individual Sum Insured. Hence it is restrictive.

How much health insurance does one need?

You can decide the policy amount based on factors likes number of family members to be covered under the policy, the age of family members and the amount of premium you are willing to pay.​

What do you mean by cashless hospitalisation?

It means a facility extended by Us to the Insured where the payments, of the costs of treatment undergone by the Insured in accordance with the Policy Terms and Conditions, are directly made to network provider by the health insurance Company to the extent pre-authorization approved.

What do you mean by reimbursement claim?

​This type of payment or settlement occurs when you, the insured, pays the hospital or nursing home for the treatment. Later, you can get this amount reimbursed by submitting the claim documents as specified in the mediclaim policy wordings, for the covered services, to Us .

What are pre- and post-hospitalisation expenses?

Pre-hospitalisation expenses are medical expenses incurred before hospitalisation. Under the HealthGain policy, you will get coverage for 60 days.


Post-hospitalisation expended are medical expenses incurred after hospitalisation. Under the HealthGain policy, you will get coverage for 60 days.


​What is the maximum age for renewal under Reliance HealthWise policy?

The maximum renewable age under a Reliance HealthWise policy is up to 75 yrs.

What tax benefits can you avail by having a health insurance?

​The premium paid on a health insurance policy is eligible for deduction under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act. So save with your policy now!

Is medical test mandatory for everyone? Where can the tests be conducted?

Medical test is mandatory for Individuals above 45 years. The medical tests will be done at the empaneled diagnostic centers.

Can the nominee be changed in the mid-term of the policy?

Sure, why not?
All you need to do is, give your new nominee details to the Company.

What do you mean by Date of Inception?

​The Inception date is the date of the commencement of the Policy Period.

How can I add my family members to my existing policy?

​You can add family members to your existing policy only when you are renewing your Individual Policy or Floater mediclaim insurance Policy subject to applicable underwriting guidelines and approval from us.

You cannot add dependants in the middle of a policy term, except in the case of a new born baby (from 91 day) or a newly married spouse. For product specific conditions have a look at the product brochures.

Can the sum insured be changed in the mid-term?

No.

What is Co-Payment?

​Co-payment is a cost-sharing requirement under a health insurance policy, where the Policy Holder / insured  will bear a specified percentage of the admissible costs

What is a waiting period?

​A waiting period is the length of time you, the insured, will have to wait before the benefits under the health policy can be utilised.

What is the health insurance policy tenure?

A policy tenure is the period for which an insurance policy provides coverage. Under HealthGain Policy, you can enjoy the benefits of the mediclaim policy for one year.

What are the benefits of the Health Card?

​A health card is very convenient in times of need. Firstly, you need it to facilitate cashless transactions at hospitals. Secondly, it has all of Reliance General Insurance’s contact information, which you might need during an emergency.

​How and when can I make changes in policy?

To make any changes in your policy, you will need to write a letter to Reliance General Insurance detailing the change required and submit the same at any of the branch offices, with all the required documentation.

How do I find out which Hospitals are part of a given medical insurance network?

​Login to our website to find a list of the empanelled hospitals in our network. Alternatively, you can also call our helpline (​+91 22 48903009​) or email us at rgicl.services@relianceada.com and we will help you out.

​Can a misplaced policy be replaced?

In case you lose or misplace your policy document, Reliance General insurance Company can issue you the same again. For this, you would need to submit a request letter at any of the branch offices, narrating the circumstances in which the original policy was lost. On receipt of this letter, the company will provide you with a policy document for a charge of Rs 100.

​How can I cancel my policy?

To cancel your policy, you would need to write to Reliance General Insurance mentioning your requirement. On receiving the letter, your premium amount will be refunded on short term basis, in case of unexpired policy period is more than 6 months, provided you have not lodged any claim in the Policy.

What is a ‘Free Look Period’?

A ‘Free Look Period’ is a period of 15 days from the date of receipt of the policy that a policyholder, in this case you, have to review the entire health insurance plan. If you disagree with any of the terms or conditions mentioned in the policy, you have the option of returning the policy by stating the reasons for the objection. Following this, you are entitled to a refund of the premium paid, provided no claim has been made under this mediclaim insurance policy (subject only to a deduction of the expenses incurred by the company on medical examination and the stamp duty charges). Please note that this facility is not applicable on renewal and portability cases.

​Will the health insurance policy provide cover in case of any hospitalisation abroad?

No, the health policy will not provide cover while you are abroad. For that you can opt for our travel policies.

What are "Donor Expenses"?

​The Company will provide the Policyholder up to 50% of Base Sum Insured as mentioned in the policy document subject to maximum of Rs 5 lakh, in following circumstances:

  • The organ donation is in accordance with the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994 (amended) and other applicable laws and rules
  • The company has admitted the insured person's claim under the Policy
  • The organ donated is for the insured person's use.

​What is "Hospitalization Expenses"?

Hospitalisation expenses are as follows. In case of:

  • in-patient treatment for covered illnesses or injuries, where hospitalisation takes place for more than 24 consecutive hours.
  • day-care treatment for surgeries or procedures requiring less than 24 hours of hospitalisation due to advanced technology. For the list of Day care treatment, please refer to Annexure -1 of the policy wordings.

​What is "Domiciliary Hospitalization"?

    • Sometimes it happens that you should be hospitalised, but you cannot be moved to a hospital due to your condition or the hospital has no room. In such cases, you can be treated at home. This is called ‘domiciliary hospitalisation’.
    • Medical expenses for such cases will be covered if the treatment continues for a minimum of three days.

    Can one cover a family staying in different parts of the country under a single policy?

    Yes, you can cover your family members under one policy even if you are staying in different parts of the country. The cashless facility is available at over 3,000 leading hospitals and nursing homes spread across India. You can avail of the facility at any of these locations in any unfortunate event.​

    ​If I am admitted in a hospital for less than a day, is the expense still covered?

    The hospitalisation expenses are covered only if you have been hospitalised for a minimum period of 24 hours. However, certain day care treatments, which do not require 24 hour hospitalisation, are also covered under our Health Insurance policy.
    Some of the Day care procedures are as below -

    • Dialysis
    • Chemotherapy
    • Radiotherapy
    • Lithotripsy (kidney stone removal)
    • Tonsillectomy
    • Dilatation & Curettage
    • Cardiac Catherization
    • Surgeries/procedures that require less than 24 hours hospitalisation due to advancement in technology

    What are the factors than can affect your health insurance premium in India?

    ​Your health insurance premium is calculated on following parameters:

    • Cover opted( Individual/ floater)
    • Sum Insured Selected
    • Age of senior most member
    • Optional covers (add-on chosen)

    ​What happens to the premium if no claims are made against the policy?

    If you have not made any claims against your policy during the year, Reliance General Insurance offers you a renewal discount of 5% of base premium on each claim free renewal. The maximum overall discount is 20% over all claim free periods.

    Does a claim have to be lodged or made in a specific time frame from the time of the accident?

    ​We recommend that you initiate the Health Insurance claim process as soon as you can. You will need to submit written proof of the claim along with the signed claim form to us within a maximum period of 60 days from the date of discharge.

    ​What are the documents required for a health insurance claim in India?

    At the time of filing a Health Insurance claim, along with your claim form, you need to submit the following documents:

    • Duly completed and signed claim form, in original
    • Medical practitioner's referral letter advising hospitalisation
    • Medical practitioner's prescription advising drugs / diagnostic tests / consultation
    • Original bills, receipts and discharge card from the hospital / medical practitioner
    • Original bills from pharmacy / chemists
    • Original pathological / diagnostic test reports and payment receipts
    • Indoor/in-patient case papers
    • Ambulance receipt and bill
    • First Information Report (FIR)/ Final Police Report in Medico-Legal Cases (MLC), if applicable
    • Post mortem report in MLC, if applicable
    • Any other document as required by the company to assess the claim

    Is there a limit on the number of claims that one can make in a health insurance plan period?

    No, there is no limit on the number of Health insurance claims made in a policy period subject to the maximum limit of sum insured.

    If I avail of the cashless facility, will you, the insurer, pay the complete amount?

    ​We will make payments towards all admissible charges upto the limit of your sum insured.

    Under what circumstances can Reliance General Insurance Company reject my medical insurance claim?

    ​A claim can be rejected if it does not comply with the terms and conditions of the policy.

    Does a higher cover provide privileged treatment in case of hospitalisation and claim?

    ​No, it doesn’t. However, a higher cover would mean a better protection.
